SPT / Scotrail Class 314 25kV Electric Multiple Unit Operator : Scotrail on behalf of SPT Built: 1979-1980 by British Rail Engineering Ltd. Power Supply: Overhead 25Kv AC Design speed: 75Mph Formation: 3 car units consisting of DMSO+TSO+DMSO Multiple Working : 313-323 Sixteen Class 314 units were introduced into the former "Strathclyde Transport" network in 1980 to complement the existing fleet of Class 303 "Blue Trains". These units worked exclusively on the North Glasgow network on Helensburgh/Balloch/Milngavie to Airdrie/Motherwell services. When new, the sets appeared in BR blue/grey livery as was standard also with the 303s at the time. Soon after, this gave way to "Strathclyde Transport" orange and black, and recently with the formation of SPT, a number of sets now wear the traditional blood and custard livery. Cascades caused by the introduction of class 334 "Juniper" units have caused the 314s to be kicked from their home territory by Class 318s. They now operate suburban services on the Cathcart Circle and Neilston/Newton lines.
